WHAT WE'RE DOING

Strongly supported by Reach Volunteering, our campaign volunteer group first met in January 2019. Our first phase – key findings from mapping of current activity undertaken primarily by key charity umbrella and member organisations – identified strong commitment and support for the aims of this campaign as well as some current good practice, though often in silos. It also highlighted the lack of access to Black and Asian network organisations as a key factor in the lack of racial diversity on charity trustee Boards.

Respondents to our questionnaire survey included ACEVO, the Association of Chairs, Charity Finance Group, Getting On Board, NCVO, Reach Volunteering, the Small Charities Coalition, Voice4Change England and Green Park interim, executive search and diversity consultancy.

CAMPAIGN CHAMPIONS

We especially invite these partners and supporters to become our champions. To work together and play key and public roles in engaging their peers and other sector leaders to support the goals of the campaign personally and through their own communications channels and networks. We will only reach our target of 10,000 more Black and Asian trustees by 2026 if every UK charity sets and commits to meeting trustee racial diversity targets by 2026.

DEVELOPING OUR BLACK AND ASIAN NETWORK ORGANISATIONS (BANOS) DATABASE

The significant finding from our mapping research was the lack of access to and knowledge of Black and Asian networks and individuals from whom charities might recruit trustees to meet their skills and experience needs. Our database – now over 500 diverse organisations- is a practical, low cost solution to this. We know there are hundreds – even thousands more similar organisations. We will continue to research and add them to the database as we find them.

PRACTICAL GUIDE ON HOW TO RECRUIT BLACK AND ASIAN TRUSTEES

(The campaign has clearly revealed a need from charities for practical tips, advice and case studies on how to successfully recruit and retain trustees from Black and Asian backgrounds. For many charities, there is a remarkable lack of knowledge of how to even start going about this.

This Guide has recently been published (September 2021), offering practical guidance, advice and signposting for charities seeking Black and Asian trustees. This would seek to cover charities in a range of situations. It would include guidance on how to make best use of the database, how to research and engage your own ”BANOs” and how to address your barriers and challenges and those facing potential applicants from Black and Asian backgrounds.

SOCIAL NETWORK FOR POTENTIAL AND CURRENT BLACK AND ASIAN TRUSTEES

We’ve identified the need for an online space which would enable Black and Asian trustees and people from Black and Asian backgrounds interested in becoming trustees to:
● learn about the role of charities and the responsibilities of trustees
● learn from each others’ experiences as trustees or aspiring trustees ,
● provide peer and role model support In encouraging and supporting others
● learn about the barriers and challenges for them applying to and become and being trustees and the solutions
● learn from charities and trustee recruitment agencies about their barriers and challenges
